Studio 1 Debut Exhibition

The medieval Guildhall in the historic village of Thaxted, Essex will, in June, become the venue for exciting new textile collective Studio One's debut exhibition, ‘A Shore Thing’ which brings together the work of 12 artists from the eastern region under the mentorship of established textile artist, Ann Small.

Studio One was formed in 2008 with a core membership of those attending workshops run by Ann from her studio in Essex. The quirky title hints at the source of inspiration chosen by the group as a focus for their creative talents and which has culminated in a stunning series of evocative textiles recreating the colours and textures synonymous with the British seashore. The exploration of this theme has unleashed diverse and imaginative interpretations.

Coming from a variety of creative backgrounds, it is apparent that the overriding factor uniting the group is an unrestrained passion for textiles! Pam Jones, a recent member explains;

“I’d had a life-long ambition to learn more about embroidery techniques and improve my stitching abilities. When I joined Studio One, I was amazed at the level of expertise shown by everyone. For me it is a journey of self-development. I really value the camaraderie of working together towards a common goal.”

Fellow exhibitor, Brenda Phillips adds:

“We meet regularly throughout the year to develop individual ideas, problem-solve and offer one another feedback so as well as providing a wonderfully supportive and stimulating environment in which to work, this has been the foundation that has really enabled us to exploit our wide range of skills and experience. With Ann as mentor, we appreciate that the balance between being nurtured and yet simultaneously nudged out of our ‘comfort zones’ will always challenge us to explore our potential as artists. Studio One is an interesting place where tradition and innovation meet, and where expertise and experimentation sit comfortably side by side.”

Sounds like something not to be missed!
